US President Donald Trump on Thursday received an invitation from King Charles to attend a second state visit in the UK.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer presented Trump with the royal invitation from the King during their meeting in the Oval Office, New York Post reported.

"This is really special, this has never happened before, this is unprecedented," Starmer said as he handed Trump a hand-signed letter from the King containing the invitation. "The answer is yes," Trump responded, accepting the invitation.

After reading the letter, Trump said of Charles, "He's a beautiful man, a wonderful man -- I've gotten to know him very well, actually. First term and now second term."

He added, "On behalf of our wonderful First Lady Melania and myself, the answer is yes and we look forward to being there and honoring the King and honoring really your country."

"Your country is a fantastic country and it’ll be our honor to be there. Thank you very much," he told UK PM. Starmer said the offer of a second state visit "symbolizes the strength of the relationship between us".

According to BBC, traditionally second-term US presidents are not offered a state visit and have instead been invited for tea or lunch with the monarch at Windsor Castle. However, this invitation have made Trump the first elected political leader in modern times to be hosted for two state visits by a British monarch.

In June 2019, the late Queen Elizabeth welcomed Trump for a three-day state during his first term in office. That visit put Trump in a select group of US presidents, as only Barack Obama and George W Bush were afforded official state visits to Britain during Elizabeth's record 70 years on the throne. The visit was not the only occasion when Trump met Elizabeth. He was also invited to tea at Windsor Castle during a trip to Britain in 2018.
