US President Donald Trump Calls Putin, Agrees To Negotiate Ukraine Ceasefire

<p class="paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph" data-uri="cms.cnn.com/_components/paragraph/instances/cm725ec80000g3b6sfir3rhog@published" data-editable="text" data-component-name="paragraph" data-article-gutter="true">US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he had a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin and agreed to begin negotiations to broker a ceasefire to the war in Ukraine.</p> <p class="paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph" data-uri="cms.cnn.com/_components/paragraph/instances/cm725ec80000g3b6sfir3rhog@published" data-editable="text" data-component-name="paragraph" data-article-gutter="true">This is the first conversation between the US and Russian President since Trump assumed office after January 20 inauguration.&nbsp;</p> <p class="dcr-s3ycb2">Trump, in a social media post, said he had a "lengthy and highly productive phone call" with Russian President Putin and the two leaders agreed to "have our respective teams start negotiations immediately".</p> <p class="dcr-s3ycb2">"As we both agreed, we want to stop the millions of deaths taking place in the War with Russia/Ukraine," Trump wrote on his social media platform TruthSocial.</p> <p class="dcr-s3ycb2">The US President also said that he and Putin agreed to visit each other&rsquo;s nations. He also said that he discussed Ukraine, the Middle East, energy, Artificial Intelligence, the power of the Dollar, among other subjects.</p> <p class="dcr-s3ycb2">"President Putin even used my very strong Campaign motto of, &lsquo;COMMON SENSE.&rsquo; We both believe very strongly in it. We agreed to work together, very closely, including visiting each other&rsquo;s Nations," Trump said.</p> <p class="dcr-s3ycb2">Meanwhile, Vladumir Putin told Trump that a 'long-term settlement' of Ukraine conflict is possible via peace talks, AFP reported quoting Kremlin spokesperson.</p> <p class="dcr-s3ycb2">"President Putin ... agreed with Trump that a long-term settlement could be reached through peace negotiations," Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. The Russian official said that the call between the two leaders lasted for around one-and-a-half hours.</p> <p class="paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph" data-uri="cms.cnn.com/_components/paragraph/instances/cm725yakl000t3b6shii9tj7t@published" data-editable="text" data-component-name="paragraph" data-article-gutter="true">Donald Trump had been signaling his desire to speak with the Russian President for weeks as he had promised to resolve the Ukraine conflict.</p>
