Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin’s absence from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official engagements in the state on Sunday has drawn sharp criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with leaders accusing him of “insulting” the Prime Minister and demanding an apology. While PM Modi was in Rameswaram to inaugurate the new Pamban Bridge and launch development initiatives worth over ₹8,000 crore, Stalin was in the hill town of Udhagamandalam (Ooty) to inaugurate a government hospital.

According to news agency PTI, Stalin stated, “We have sought an appointment to present the memorandum on the delimitation… Since I am taking part in this government function, I have conveyed to the PM about my inability to take part in his meeting and deputed our Ministers Thangam Thennarasu and Raja Kannappan. Through this meeting and through you, I hereby seek the Prime Minister to allay the fears of delimitation.”

Reacting to this, BJP state president K Annamalai dismissed Stalin’s remarks on delimitation as “drama” and said it was regrettable that the Chief Minister chose not to attend the Prime Minister’s programme.

“The reason given by him (CM) is not acceptable. He knows about PM’s arrival, as the discussions were happening for long. The Prime Minister did not go to New Delhi directly from Sri Lanka but came here to dedicate projects. That being the case, it is the primary duty of the CM to welcome the PM,” Annamalai told reporters, as quoted by PTI.

He accused Stalin of playing politics and mocked his trip to Ooty, saying, “He went to Ooty since it is hot in Rameswaram and he can’t bear the heat.”

“The BJP strongly condemns the CM skipping the event. The CM has failed to do his duty, should have given due respect to the PM. The chief minister has insulted the Prime Minister, who came for the sake of the people of Tamil Nadu. He should apologise to the people of Tamil Nadu. He is doing politics by speaking about delimitation,” Annamalai remarked.

If CM Stalin Continues To Ignore PM Modi, People Will Definitely Ignore Him Too: Tamilisai

BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan also criticised Stalin’s absence, contrasting it with PM Modi’s efforts. “The Chief Minister claimed that he gave nothing to the people of Tamil Nadu during his Ooty trip. But at the same time, the Prime Minister gave Tamil Nadu development projects worth ₹8,000 crore. Someone who is about to be knocked out is talking about the dugout,” she said, as per news agency ANI.

She further recalled that “when Prime Minister Modi brought good schemes to Telangana, CM K. Chandrashekar Rao boycotted him. In return, the people of Telangana boycotted him in the election. In the same way, if the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister continues to ignore the Prime Minister, the people of Tamil Nadu will definitely ignore him too.”

“The Prime Minister, who said he would stand by the Tamil people in every way, was not welcomed by the Chief Minister, which shows a lack of concern,” she added.

The BJP has demanded an apology from Stalin, alleging he failed in his duty to show respect to the Prime Minister, who they said was in the state for the benefit of its people.
