Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray launched a fierce attack on BJP MP Nishikant Dubey on Monday, accusing him of inciting linguistic tensions in Maharashtra for political gain. Reacting to Dubey’s controversial “patak patak ke marenge” (will thrash you) comment amid the ongoing Marathi vs Hindi debate, Thackeray compared the BJP leader to a “lakadbagha” (hyena) and accused the ruling party of fuelling discord to derive electoral benefits.

Speaking at Vidhan Bhavan, Uddhav alleged that the BJP was resorting to a divisive political playbook. “Divide and rule has always been the BJP’s policy. This style of politics is now losing its relevance. I can understand if their party is unsettled because of the success of our rally in Mumbai on Saturday,” he said, as quoted by news agency PTI.

In a sharp rebuttal to Dubey’s remarks targeting him and MNS chief Raj Thackeray, Uddhav said, “Such ‘lakadbaghas’ (hyenas) are trying to disturb peace and harmony in the state. Their (BJP leaders’) only business is to provoke people. We are not against any language, but we oppose the use of force to impose any language.”

Uddhav also lashed out at BJP leader and state minister Ashish Shelar for equating recent incidents in Maharashtra with the Pahalgam terror attack. “These people are damaging Maharashtra and the Marathi language. Comparing those who agitate for Marathi rights to terrorists is proof that they are against Maharashtra and Marathi people,” Uddhav said.

Taking a dig at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for labelling the recent Thackeray brothers’ rally as a “rudali” (professional mourner) event, he remarked, “Calling a proud moment for Marathi people as ‘rudali’ shows a very low and sick mindset. I can understand his mindset because the original BJP is now dead. The party of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L. K. Advani no longer exists. The people who murdered that original BJP are now running it.”

What Did Nishikant Dubey Say?

BJP MP Nishikant Dubey on Monday accused Raj Thackeray of a bid to spread anarchy after the MNS chief asked his party members to beat those who insult Marathi but don't make a video.

"...You people are surviving on our money. What kind of industries do you have?... If you are courageous enough and beat those who speak Hindi, then you should beat all those who speak Urdu, Tamil, and Telugu. If you are such a big 'boss', come out of Maharashtra; come to Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu – 'tumko patak patak ke maarenge'... We all respect Marathi and the people of Maharashtra, who fought for India's independence. The BMC election is due, and hence, Raj and Uddhav are doing cheap politics. If they have courage, they should go to Mahim and beat any Hindi or Urdu-speaking people in front of Mahim dargah," he told ANI.

#WATCH | Guwahati, Assam | On Raj Thackeray's remark 'beat but don't make a video', BJP MP Nishikant Dubey says, "...You people are surviving on our money. As a Shiv Sainik, I am issuing a last warning to Dubey. If he repeats such statements, there will be a strong reaction. He is a four-time MP and a senior leader. It does not suit someone of his stature to speak this way,” said Kadam.

Referring to Bhojpuri actor-singer and BJP MP Dinesh Lal Yadav ‘Nirahua’, who dared the Thackeray cousins to evict him from Mumbai for speaking Bhojpuri, Kadam said, “I am speaking as a Shiv Sainik and not as a minister. I will give his address to our workers and let’s see what happens to him.”

Kadam stressed that Marathi was given due respect in Maharashtra but rejected accusations of language chauvinism. “We have never forced anyone to speak only Marathi or denied the importance of other languages. But these kinds of comments are destroying the country’s social fabric,” he added.

AIMIM, BJP Leaders Also Weigh In

AIMIM leader and Aurangabad MP Imtiaz Jaleel also urged restraint, warning leaders not to fall into what he described as a political trap. “If leaders in Maharashtra respond to his latest rant, it will benefit the BJP. His remarks shouldn’t be given any importance,” Jaleel told PTI, calling Dubey’s statements a “calculated provocation”.

'No Need To Question Capabilities Of Marathi Speakers': Maharashtra Culture Minister To Nishikant Dubey

Culture Minister Ashish Shelar, addressing the Legislative Council, said the Maharashtra government would not tolerate any insult to Marathi-speaking people. Without naming Dubey, he said, “The Jharkhand MP concerned can publicly voice his stand as per law, but there was no need to question the capabilities of Marathi speakers. Marathi speakers’ contribution to GDP is known to the country. A Marathi speaker made the first film in the country and another built the Navy”, as quoted by PTI.

Shelar said the BJP-led Mahayuti government would protect the rights of both Marathi and non-Marathi speakers in the state.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray, reacting strongly to Dubey’s comments, said, “Dubey is not the face of North Indians. He represents the BJP. These remarks were made with a political intent to divide Marathi and Hindi-speaking people. They are straight out of the BJP’s playbook to create controversies when there are none and divide and rule.”

He added, “They do their business here happily. But some elements want Maharashtra to burn for their selfish political agendas.”

Borivali BJP MLA Sanjay Upadhyay urged caution and stressed linguistic harmony. “Statements that create bitterness among the people should be avoided. All languages should be respected. Languages unite people and cannot be used as a tool to break unity,” he said.

NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar also criticised the Jharkhand MP, saying, “We are not against any language, be it Hindi, Gujarati, or Marwari. However, people born in Maharashtra, irrespective of whether they know Marathi or not, should respect the Marathi language, its identity, and culture.”

Pawar accused Dubey of trying to provoke a Hindu-Muslim divide ahead of the Bihar elections, saying, “If someone comes here and challenges Marathi or Maharashtra’s culture, how can we accept that?”

The language row began after the state government’s controversial order to introduce Hindi as a third language in primary schools, which was later rolled back following strong opposition. Raj and Uddhav Thackeray had recently shared the stage for the first time in two decades to oppose what they called the “imposition” of Hindi in Maharashtra.
