Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to virtually lay the foundation stone for the redevelopment of 508 railway stations across the country on Sunday, August 6. The initiative aims to transform railway stations into modern, state-of-the-art facilities, catering to the needs of millions of passengers. The event, scheduled for 11 am, will witness the Prime Minister's participation via video conferencing, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) informed in a statement.
The redevelopment project, known as the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, reflects the Prime Minister's unwavering commitment to providing world-class public transport. With railways being the preferred mode of travel for people across the nation, PM Modi has consistently emphasised the significance of offering top-notch amenities at railway stations. To this end, the ambitious scheme was launched to revamp a total of 1309 stations nationwide.
"As part of this scheme, the foundation stone for redevelopment of 508 stations is being laid by the Prime Minister. These stations will be redeveloped at a cost of more than Rs 24,470 crores. Master Plans are being prepared for the development of these stations as ‘City Centres', with proper integration of both sides of the city," the statement said.
These 508 railway stations, targeted for redevelopment, are distributed across 27 states and Union Territories, with prominent numbers in states like Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan with 55 stations each, followed by 49 in Bihar, 44 in Maharashtra, and 37 in West Bengal, among others. Notably, the rejuvenation plans focus on modern passenger amenities, efficient traffic circulation, seamless inter-modal integration, and comprehensive signage to facilitate passenger guidance.
To add a touch of regional flair and preserve cultural heritage, the station buildings' design will be inspired by local architecture and customs. This approach aims to infuse a sense of identity and uniqueness into each station, representing the diverse cultural tapestry of India.
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which was launched in February, exemplifies a long-term, strategic approach to station development. The project entails the meticulous preparation of 'master plans' and their phased implementation, ensuring a gradual but continuous improvement of railway station facilities. This methodical approach will result in a significant improvement in passenger experience and convenience across the country's vast railway network.
